Last year, during my book tour, I had a chance to visit Henan University in China. I was impressed by the people and learning environment. When we bid goodbye last year, we all hope to continue the conversations on arts and education. In late April, the School of Fine Art at Henan University contacted me. They wanted to put my name forward as the first international scholar to teach via the newly established cloud-based lecture platform. My name will be competing with many other candidates from different departments in the university. I was honored but afraid at the same time. After much thoughts, I kindly declined because I was very concerned about the timeframe and materials that I need to prepare in such a short time to do a good job. A week later, the Assistant Dean contacted me, he told me that the School of Fine Art was impressed by my honest decision and willing to work around my schedule. He shared with me why a curriculum design course will benefit their students' career path. I was touched by their sincerity and vision to cultivate their students in both Fine Arts majors and Art Education majors. We began to work on the proposal. A few weeks later, they informed me with excitement. It was an honor to be selected as the first international scholar representing the School of Fine Art, and the only one offering summer online course. (I am sure there were so many behind-the-scenes paper trails and countless hours that my colleagues worked to make it happen.)
In July, I began the journey teaching 10-session summer course on Theories and Practices of Curriculum Design through Arts with 115 students at College of Fine Art, Henan University, China. I am so impressed by their motivation to learn. The Vice Department Chair, Professor Zhou Chun-yan, assisted me throughout the course, ensure all 115 students were on the same page and followed my mini challenges that mixed with art criticism, creative problem solving, intersections between teaching subjects, standards, and STEAM. I have learned so much from these young artists/future teachers.
The last class was on August 13. The Dean, Dr. Xi Wei-quan, Vice Dean Mr. Wang Sheng-song, and Department Chair Xiao Hai-hong gave me a surprised end-of-the-course ceremony. A student representative gave a speech while the rest of the students showered me with heart emojis... (wet eyes...)
Despite the distance, I felt the love and friendships.
I am truly blessed.
2019年五月,我有幸參訪河南大學美術學院推廣統整藝術的理念。當時行程匆匆,不能久待,學院期待日後再續情緣。沒想到在疫情期間約四月底的時候,河大聯絡,希望把我推薦為首届雲課堂的國際學者,作爲美術學院的代表與學校其他系所競爭。我既榮幸又是惶恐。幾經思考,我婉拒河大的邀請,因爲時間實在太短,我怕辜負他們的好意。沒想到一個星期之後,王聖松副院長親自聯絡。他說學校開會時,他們對我誠實的婉拒印象深刻,因此,更有信心我的課的質量(流汗)。他順便提到,位居中原的河大是歷史悠久的學校,他們一直希望多方拓展學生的視野,讓他們畢業更容易找到工作。我聽了體會出他們的用心良苦。於是,我們很快地把計劃書擬定呈交。幾個星期過後,我被選上了,而且,爲了配合我準備需要的時間,成爲唯一的一位夏季國際學者(我相信河大的同仁爲了促成此次的機緣,背後肯定是付出很多時間來溝通與處理文件)。他們爲學生的真誠付出與對我的肯定,都讓我感動莫名。
從7月中開始上課,10次課眨眼而過,我與115個學生共度許多學習過程的點滴。這期間,很感謝河大美術教育系副主任周春燕教授全程協助,幫我聯絡學生,確保學生與我之間的溝通良善。學生的表現讓我開心與欣慰。有好幾個讓人驚喜的課程設計內容。
8月13日是課程的最後一次課,離情依依中,河大院長席衛權、副院長王聖松、系主任肖海紅、書記楊江濤先生以及各部室竟然給我一個惜別驚喜。學生代表錢藝煊致辭以外,學生們也遠距送心心。
感恩這一個難得的經驗,我們得以再續智慧交流的機會。
我真的是一個有福之人。

In June, Mootan Oh, the director of Page One Art Academy contacted me. She was wondering if there is a chance to provide some courses on aesthetic education and arts integration during the lockdown in Malaysia. With "what can art education do in the time of Covid 19?" as the big question in mind, we spent many conversations to map out this 4 week courses. It is in our belief that the unique characteristics of arts education, specifically, being able to connect our mind and body, will provide a place for us to think and rethink the value and the meaning of life.
My students includes afterschool art program instructors (who experienced financial impacts because of the Covid 19), teachers from public schools, and stay-home moms. They are all interested in arts and curious about how to connect arts with everyday life and family education.
During this four-week course, I was able to listen to their life stories, experiences with arts and teaching. Their reflections remind me so much of the many afternoons that I spent with my young children. From the quality of the assignments, I can tell that they are serious learners and responsible teachers/parents. They have given me many lights to refine my philosophy in teaching and in life.
I appreciate Mootan's compassion, reaching out during pandemic. This course has become an anchor and a light in this invisible yet cruel strom.
六月,正值全球疫情快速蔓延之際。遠在馬來西亞新山的胡牡丹院長聯係,希望經由網課的方式來讓宅家的大馬老師們有機會接觸美術教育跨領域的課程,特別在疫情的當下,美術教育能起什麽作用。我們談了很久,深深覺得,美術教育連結感知的特質,在這突來的風暴中,對於生命價值與生活意義,更顯得重要。這四堂課程,應運而生。
學員們,有的是課後美術教育才藝班的老師,有的是在學校單位的老師,也有全職媽媽。他們都對美術充滿喜愛,也好奇如何從生活的細節來探究美,來思考教育的歷程。
四個星期的時間,每一次我都從學員身上學到很多人生的經驗。透過他們的分享,我也重溫當年帶小孩長大的情況。他們分享的作業,都顯示出他們對人生所扮演的角色的期許,負責的態度。
十分感謝胡牡丹院長帶領的團隊促成這次教學相長的機會,為疫情帶來許多溫情。
